clue characters board game vs clue weapons

While playing a game of clue (the board game) , I was asking the other clue players what theyClue card back think was the most probable clue weapon that a clue board game characters would use to commit the murder on Mr. Boddy. I got a couple of answers, so just for the fun of it, I will make associations between a clue character a clue board game weapon and a clue room. I will start with the male clue characters and in a second post the ladies of the clue board game.

Clue board game character #1

Clue character (Colonel Mustard)
Clue weapon (Revolver)
Clue room (Conservatory)
clue character card Colonel Mustardclue weapon card Revolverclue room card Conservatory

This one is obvious, this ex-military man would never go out without a revolver. For walking the dog outside, a camping trip or a fancy night at a mansion, he's the indicated clue board game characters for this clue weapon. Colonel Mustard and Revolver is a natural combination. Now let's talk about the room where he could have done it. When you use a revolver, you need to make sure no one will ear you. This is not a simple task with that kind of weapon. The clue rooms on the board game that would offer this kind of protection are in my opinion the conservatory or the ballroom. Both clue rooms offer some advantages if you want to use the clue revolver. The conservatory is far away from the mansion and the ballroom could offer a sound protection if there's a loud concert taking place.

Clue accusation #1: Colonel Mustard with the Revolver in the Conservatory

Clue board game character #2

Clue character (Professor Plum)
Clue weapon (Rope)
Clue room (Study)
clue character card Professor Plumclue weapon card Ropeclue room card Study

Professor Plum is an archaeologist and we know this man is trying to fund some expeditions in all four corners of earth. In an attempt to convince Mr. Boddy, my guess is that this clue character tried a final argument in the study (far away from the action) to try convincing his host to give him some money. The mansion or the manor, is a very big building and usually the study is far away from distractions to keep it quiet and peaceful, making it a perfect clue room to commit a murder event if the victim tries to call for help. The reason why I think the clue weapon was the rope is simple. Professor Plum probably fake a demonstration of a suicide scene he saw in a far away country during one of his adventure trip. Mr. Boddy trusted this "innocent" old man and gently played the role of the hang man.

Clue accusation #2: Professor Plum with the Rope in the Study

Clue board game character #3

Clue character (Reverend Green)
Clue weapon (Candlestick)
Clue room (Billiard Room)
clue character card Reverend Greenclue weapon card Candlestickclue room card Billiard Room

Mr. Green or if you prefer Reverend Green is another clue character with fuzzy intentions. This man is always hunting for money. He will pretend that is religious convictions are driving him where he can find more funds for holy reasons, but deeper thoughts are corrupting is mind. Green clue character is mysterious, but in my opinion, he was probably at the mansion for a debt he contracted with Mr. Boddy and in an attempt to clean is due, he challenged him to a billiard game and was about to lose more when he made the lethal hit with the candlestick. This clue weapon was probably there to create a spooky atmosphere because a lot was at stakes. Clue rooms to make a nice little chat away from the others a not rare in this mansion, but this room was the perfect setup and Mr. Boddy didn't have any clue about the real motives of reverend Green, except for making a little money.

Clue accusation #3: Reverend Green with the Candlestick in the Billiard Room

clue board game strategy

clue detective notesTime to take notes!

We already saw in a previous post a clue strategy on how to use optimal paths between rooms, in the clue game arena, to navigate through the clue board game. Now it's time to reveal my clue strategy on how to take good notes to find the context clues of the murder. To do that, you'll need a piece of paper like this one (see clue detective note on the right).

My clue strategy here is to not lose a single piece of information exchanged during an accusation done by me or any other player. With want to be able to resolve the clue murderer before anybody else. The clue player that takes the best notes is the one with the best clue board game strategy, period!

clue board game strategy step 1
clue board game strategy step 1
Here's how I fill my clue detective notes. First, I put my name on top of the first column in the detective note sheet and then the name of all other player playing clue with me. Second, I put a check mark beside all the cards in my possession. The same check mark will be used when I figure the cards hold by other clue player. Third, I put an "x" mark beside the cards I don't have. The same "x" mark will be used when I know for sure that this card is not hold by a player. Take a look at the picture to see how my clue detective notes looks like at this point.

clue board game strategy step 2

clue board game strategy step 2Ok, that's the easy first step in my clue board game strategy. The following clue tips will show you a more powerful way of taking notes. So step 2 consist of every time someone will make a accusation, your will fill your detective notes. To do that, I use a question mark symbol with a number. The first accusation is number one, the second clue accusation is number two and so on.

The picture on the left shows that an accusation was made with the following clue elements: Clue Suspect Professor Plum, Clue weapon Knife and Clue room Kitchen. The question marks and the numbers under column "A" means that clue player "A" shown one of the three card of the accusation. I choose those three card to illustrate that we can already figure out that clue player "A" was holding the clue weapon card "Knife" since we already have the clue room card "Kitchen" and the clue suspect card "Professor Plum" in our hands. Let's make a more complicated example to show how you will get an edge on the other player around the clue game board.

clue board game strategy step 3
clue board game strategy step 3
Question, how do you play clue the board game ?" Ok think again after reading this cool example. After a few accusation, your clue detective notes will look a little bit like this next picture. A bunch of "x" mark, check mark and a lot of question mark. Now your job is to carefuly examine each question mark and numbers to solve some clue questions.

In this picture we can see that from the first accusation answered by clue player "A" we solve the card shown by this player to another player. It was the clue weapon card "Knife" and this is the reason why we have a green check mark there now instead of the previous question mark. The next accusation was answered by clue player "B" that revealed a card about an accusation: Clue suspect Miss Scarlett, with clue weapon Rope in clue room Library.

We placed the usual question mark with the number of the accusation. The only thing we can be sure of is that clue player "B" didn't show the clue suspect card Miss Scarlet. Nothing else can be solved from here, so we have to wait for future accusations.
The next clue accusation answered by clue player "C" will reveal the power of my clue game strategy. Of course this accusation could have been answered many turn after accusation number two, but to simplify this example, it's happening right after. So clue player "C" answered something to the accusation: Clue suspect Professor Plum with the clue weapon Wrench in the clue room Library. The board game strategy imply that you look back at previous accusations to solve previous answers. This third accusation tells us that player "C" shown the clue room card Library. Why? Simply because the clue weapon wrench is in our possession so is suspect Professor Plum. My strategy just not reveal one secret, but two secret in the same accusation. You can for sure put a check mark under column "C" in the clue room "Library" and if you look back at accusation number two, you will find out that you now know what was answered to this accusation. You were previously wondering which of the "Library" or the clue weapon "Rope" was shown, now you know exactly that it was the rope since the library clue card is in player "C" possession. You can put a green check mark under column "B" in the clue weapon rope box.

Here's a small legend to help understand my clue detective notes.

clue note x mark - don't have clue card Clue player don't have this clue item

clue note check mark - do have clue cardClue player have this clue item

clue note question mark - might have clue cardClue player might have this clue item. Player answered to accusation number 3 with one of three clue card.

I hope you enjoyed this clue board game strategy and that it will help you speed up the process of making the final accusation!

clue game arena (part 2)

In this post I want to talk about how I try to optimize my movements in the clue game arena. The arena is for me the actual board. I like this term since it sounds like gladiator fighting to kill someone!

clue suspect starting pos in the clue arena So, here's a picture of the clue arena with all the starting position of all clue suspects. My first goal in the arena is to move to a clue room with the less dice roll as possible. My favorite clue suspect and clue room duo are the conservatory and Mrs. Peacock. I don't know if it's a flaw in the board design, but if you look at the clue game board closely, you will see that there's only six square between Mrs. Peacock's starting position and the conservatory room door (shortest path between a room and a suspect starting position).

The other reason why I like this duo, is that you end up in a clue room with a secret passage to another clue room. Using secretBest starting position in the clue game arena passages is a well known clue strategy to speed up the amount of accusation you can make every turn. So the goal is to maximize the use of the secret passage to find out as many clues as possible about the context of the murder.

The way I usually do it, is by changing room every turn and build up accusations until I know for sure who is the culprit with what weapon and in which room. Many times what happen is that you can't find out what the room is because the conservatory and the lounge are either in your possession or in someone else's possession, so you'll have to move in other clue room soon.

The following picture will illustrate how I navigate in the clue game arena when I need to make accusation from other rooms. Ideally, you want to make sure to end up in a different room every time you roll the dice, so tooptimal paths in clue game arena do that, try to move along the path in this picture. In order, the clue room visited in the game arena are (blue path):
  • Conservatory --> Ballroom (3 square)
  • Ballroom --> Billiard Room (5 square)
  • Billiard Room --> Library (3 square)
  • Library --> Hall (6 square)
  • Hall --> Study (3 square)

There is also an alternate path in this picture (red path) that is leading to the kitchen room. The reason why I have put this path is to illustrate another way to figure out if the murder was done in the kitchen or the study (through the secret passage). You would take this path if you are already suspecting one of the two clue room. Try to use has much as possible the clue game board at your advantage. Don't try to walk long distance to early in the game to figure out the room where the murder took place. While finding hints for weapons and suspects, you might even be able to find it just by taking good notes of other people accusations. If you keep tight clue notes of all accusation context in the clue game arena, you will save some time and movement. Good places to start investigating for clue weapons and clue suspects are between the following clue rooms:

  • Conservatory and lounge (secret passage)
  • Study and Kitchen (secret passage)
  • Hall and Hall (only one square to walk since there's two door next to each other)
  • Billiard Room and Library (only three square to walk)
  • Hall and Study (only three square to walk)
  • Lounge and Dining room (only three square to walk)
  • Conservatory and Ballroom (only three square to walk)
Optimal moving in the clue game arena is one thing, taking good notes and establishing the context of the murder in another. In the next post, I will give examples of context clues and reveal all my secrets on how not to lose track of any action in the clue game arena.

clue game arena

The clue game arena or more commonly known has Tudor's Mansion, is the house where Mr. John Boddy was found dead. At the time of the crime, a bunch of people (the suspects) where in this mansion and one of them did the unthinkable!

We all know those famous suspects by name, but do you really know who they are and why they were at Tudor's Mansion that night?

clue game arena suspect Colonel Mustard
Colonel Mustard (aka Michael Mustard)

Did you know that this man never sleep without a revolver near his bed? That he received military decorations such has: The Distinguished Service Order (DSO) (UK military decoration) (for a battle at khyber pass in Afganistan, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), for his services in the army during the world war. He's a retired military man and he's also someone that attract ladies attention.

Mr. Green (aka Reverend Green)

This man is without a doubt addicted to money. A two face man, peacefull and religious with dark secrets related to money. Always trying to raises more funds for religion, this man is also associated with the word gangster.
Mr. Green was short on money when he went to the mansion. He's the kind of businessman without to much scruples.

Did he contract a debt to Mr. Boddy? Was Mr. Boddy aware of incriminating facts about Reverend Green? Who knows? But he is for sure a prime suspect in the game arena.

Yound, sexy, Miss Scarlet is definitely playing a game of charm in thie Clue arena. People are saying that this young lady is looking for gold in man's pockets. It was also said that she is in love with the colonel, so are they playing a tactical game here? This lady is up to something in the mansion, but how can we know of Mr. Boddy and Colonel Mustard, who is the victim and if the crime is a murder or true love?

So, for love or money, this gorgeous young lady is for sure a suspect in this clue game.

Mrs. White (aka Blanche)
clue game arena suspect Mrs. White
The maid or the cook, Blanche White was not a guess at the mansion the night of the murder, she was an employe. For long years, she saw everything going in and out of this mansion.
More then everybody else, this mansion, her house, as no secret for her. She's getting older and probably a little bit tired of serving this man Mr. Boddy.

Mrs. Peacock (aka Henrietta, Elizabeth, the widow)

This wealthy lady, went through many weddings and many... death. She likes money more than everything. She's a convincing and determinate person. That we don't know for sure, but we sure know that a younger lady (miss Scarlet) was there that night. The clue game arena most have been hot that night and who knows what Mrs. Peacock is capable of.

Just to refresh the memories of some people that haven't played this game for a while, the goal of this board game is to solve the scene of a crime. Who's the killer, Where did he (or she) make the crime and With what weapon. How do we solve this crime? You go in the clue arena, you make your little investigation by asking people if they know something about the crime. The goal is to gather precious informations and deduce the crime scene before the other clue player. You can take notes (well, this is not really an option unless you are some kind of clue genius) after you asked some questions or after someone else asked questions. To play clue the board game, you need to know how to ask the right questions to the right people. You will also need some tactics to slow down the other player from getting to much precious clues.
